A few failed areas can often be repaired. Repeated patching across most of a road usually means the pavement needs overlay or reconstruction. Drainage problems and base failure should be addressed; otherwise the same holes return.

How is asphalt road repair different from patching a parking lot?
The method is similar, but road repairs have to account for travel speeds, lane use, and often heavier traffic. The repair limits and compaction still have to match the surrounding pavement.
Can repairs be done before resurfacing?
Yes. Failed areas are often repaired first so an overlay is not placed over pavement that is already moving or holding water.
When is road repair no longer enough?
When distress is widespread, the base is failing, or the pavement has oxidized and cracked over most of the surface, overlay or reconstruction should be evaluated instead of isolated patches.
